‘Swingin’ With A Star’ Raises $60,000 in 2007, Exceeds $1.1 Million Mark in Donations for Women’s Causes
WILMINGTON, Del. --- The 2007 Swingin’ With A Star (SWAS) women’s golf tournament raised more than $60,000 for the Delaware Fund For Women and the Christiana Care Breast Center Special Needs Fund, SWAS chair Carolyn S. Burger announced today. The annual Swingin’ With A Star tournament has exceeded the $1.1 million mark in total money raised for local women’s causes, Burger said.
Swingin’ With A Star was launched 16 years ago, with all net proceeds benefiting Delaware women and girls. In 2007, the tournament generated $48,000 for the Fund For Women, bringing the total raised for that organization to more than $876,000. Swingin’ With A Star also raised $12,000 for the Christiana Care Breast Center Special Needs Fund in 2007, boosting its total to nearly $70,000.
“We are very grateful to our sponsors, our “stars” and our volunteers for helping us to fund services and programs for women and their families,” Burger said. “Swingin’ With A Star is not just about raising money. It’s just as important to recognize how that money is spent. Programs and services offered by the Fund For Women and the Christiana Care Breast Center are vital to the well-being of local women and have positive impacts throughout the region.”
The Delaware Fund for Women is a non-profit endowment fund at the Delaware Community Foundation. The organization assists women and girls through an annual grant program. The Christiana Care Breast Center Special Needs Fund helps pay for mammograms for women who can’t afford them as well as childcare, transportation and other assistance.
“We want to thank everyone connected with Swingin’ With A Star for their 16 years of tireless efforts on our behalf,” said Susan Sherk, Fund For Women chair and spokesperson. “Because of their dedication and commitment, we are able to help women and their children lead safer, healthier and more stable lives.”
“The wonderful support provided by Swingin’ With A Star has enabled more women to receive treatment regardless of their income and their circumstances,” said Dr. Emily Penman, breast surgeon and medical director of the Christiana Care Breast Center. “We are very happy to be a beneficiary of this event.”
The tournament is called Swingin’ With A Star because each foursome plays one hole with an LPGA ‘star,’ who joins participants afterward for a cocktail reception and the famous SWAS auction. One of the tournament founders is Ladies Professional Golf Association Hall of Famer Betsy Rawls.
